The society was founded in 1949 by Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson, Peter Lanyon, Bernard Leach, Sven Berlin, and Whilemina Barns-Graham, amongst others. Later members have included Patrick Heron, Terry Frost, and honorary member Henry Moore.
